“We have to stop meeting like this.” Saru’s red hair falls over my shoulders as he whispers in my ear.

“You mean, you guys need to stop luring us into shady meetings in the woods where anyone could be waiting to jump out and murder us?” Tarbok retorts, the grin on his face enunciating the teasing lilt to his voice.

Saru laughs, moving around the front of us with his hands behind his back, doing his weird little crouch dance that makes him appear more like a crazy psycho killer than a royal protector.

“Saru, enough.”

“Ever the spoilsport boss,” he tuts, before throwing a wink at us and sitting himself down next to Jaeger on the logs surrounding the fire. Spotting all the guys gathering around the warm flames, only Blade is missing. I don’t bother looking up to see if I can find him in the branches above, knowing he always resides up there during our meetings. He’s definitely the quietest of the bunch. I can only recall once or twice where I’ve heard him speak.

Moving further into the little clearing they chose as our meeting place tonight, Tarbok and I take a seat on the logs circling the fire pit in the centre. Archie sits hunched over with his elbows on his knees, tending to the spit roast that’s suspended over the roaring fire while Jaeger sits on the opposite side of him, using the floor as a seat and the log as a back rest. With one knee out straight and the other bent, he rests an arm back against the log and another on his bent knee as he looks in our direction, giving us dark scowl and a very unsettling smile.

Taking our seats in between the two men, with Tarbok on my right, we find ourselves meeting the gaze of Ryzer over the molten blaze in front of us. With his hands steepled under his chin, he stares unnervingly into the flames with a look of pure agitation in his eyes. A scowl marrs his face and distorts the skin on his forehead. His midnight blue hair dropping down in front of the glasses that frame his dark sapphire eyes, belying an uneasiness that’s never usually seen on the face of the boss of this little rag tag group.

You know things must be getting bad if Ryzer looks anything other than composed and in control.

“The Dhakrog have control over more than sixty percent of Simbale. We received word they moved in on Triverton in the early hours of this morning.” Joining growls from both Jaeger and Saru sound out before dissipating just as quickly. Ryzer glances at them questioningly but they refuse to meet his eyes.

Dismissing the odd behaviour, he continues. “An adventurer they’ve deemed, Callamina, the light bearer, single handedly defeated the battalion of Dhakrog’s sent to secure the village before setting off into the mountains to find a missing child.”

I catch sight of Jaeger and Saru out of the corner of my eye, noticing them sharing a look with one another before breaking out in huge grins.
